Corpus Christi Historical Connection
The Corpus Christi Caller- Times, when celebrating its 100th birthday on January 23, 1983, it gave Corpus this sculpture, Wind in the Sails, by sculptor Kent Ullberg. ( Romage 1- Work Cited) This monument is used to mark a special occasion in the history of the Caller- Times newspaper, which is endeavor that records the daily events of Corpus Christ. Articles printed in the newspaper are used to record aspects of local history every day. A large part of my project came from information found in articles within the Central Libraries Vertical Files. Furthermore, a more community oriented connection about this sculpture is that most locals know this statue. However, whether they know its name and purpose or not, its existence affects the culture of citizens in Corpus by adding to the city's identity as a community widely known for its oceanic research and port. While asking residents of Corpus Christi whether they knew the name of this sculpture or even the purpose behind its existence, I found that no such knowledge really existed; however, the majority had a fond remembrance of the sculpture and had his or her own personal connection to it. This realization allowed me to see that the effect of sculptures and monuments are bigger than I could have ever anticipated. Even though the knowledge of the sculpture is not well known, it still creates an effect for both the locals of Corpus Christi and its tourists. |

I found articles mentioning why this piece was commissioned and the planning of the sculpture's size and location. |
