When I first went to this library with my father when I was in elementary, I always wondered about the sculpture at its entrance. At the time I did not realize it was a sculpture, because I had yet to learn what a sculpture was. All I knew was that it was beautiful as well as a mystery. Even though I have taken away the mystery of my childhood imaginings of the sculpture the beauty is now found in the discovery of the meaning and background of the sculpture. The process of looking for both the identification and meaning of this particular sculpture has only intensified the importance of this art piece in my mind. |
Corpus Christi Vertical Files- CC History Connection
Although the installment of this sculpture at the front of the library was never disputed, this piece was mentioned in many articles from the Corpus Christi Vertical Files that mentioned a dispute library had about purchasing works of art. This shows, in a way, the debate over how much people are willing to spend for art. It begs the question whether or not art is important or not. This topic has be disputed for generations, yet the majority opinion is that art preserves aspects of human history in a way that primary source documents can not fully achieve. Art is used to not only to show a picture, but to express an emotion. For example, the Sunseeker depicts the beauty of the to of fauna we experience in Corpus, but also instills emotion of happiness and calmness that matches the atmosphere of our city. Although, we have a lot going on in our growing city, but there is a very strong sense of history and stability that provides a calming sense of home. |
